meditations on violence by rory miller

Reality of Violence
  • Assaults happen closer, faster, and more violently than most expect
  • You cannot fully prepare for true violence
  • Expect an adrenaline dump
  • Violence is a human issue before a fighting issue
The Monkey Dance
  • Most violence is to establish status, not predatory
  • Ego contests can usually be escaped without a fight
  • Don’t take social games personally
  • Group Monkey Dance is pack vs prey, not person vs person
  • Never let yourself be isolated by a group
Predators
  • Predators want an easy, low-risk victim
  • Look and act like an expensive target
  • Don’t be afraid to be rude
  • Learn to see crowds from a predator’s perspective
  • Predators are in all places
The Best Defense
  • Avoidance is the easiest and most effective defense
  • Avoid bad people and bad places
  • More risk in places with altered minds, young men, or disputed territories
  • Never allow yourself to be taken to a secondary scene
  • Escape before you lose the choice
  • Force a decision on them
